What is the Late Heavy Bombardment and what does it have to do with belief in God? The Late Heavy Bombardment (LHB) was a period from about 4 to 3.8 billion years ago. During this time, the Earth and other planets were intensely bombarded by vast numbers of asteroids and comets. Evidence for this has been found in lunar rock samples from the Apollo missions, and now from the entire solar system. The largest impacts sent intensely hot rock vapor around the entire Earth, completely vaporizing all of the oceans, vaporizing a layer of Earth’s upper rock surface around the entire globe, and melting its upper rock layer. (See the video reference below from a pro-evolution video) Amazingly, at the end of this intense bombardment, we have evidence that single celled life began on Earth. Dr. J. William Schopf has found fossil evidence of 3.5 billion year old organisms that appear to be photosynthetic cyanobacteria. Dr. Minik Rosing has found other evidence for photosynthetic life on Earth even earlier, 3.8 billion years ago or earlier. Previous hypotheses that life may have occurred naturally from non-life (abiogenesis) are being overturned by the evidence. Life could not begin naturally in an upper layer of molten rock. Suppositions that abiogenesis may have occurred in hydrothermal vents below this upper molten rock layer do not explain how the earliest known life was photosynthetic. As the evidence compounds, we are seeing more and more clearly that abiogenesis did not occur on Earth and that there was no time for evolution to turn primitive heat-loving organisms into advanced photosynthetic organisms even if it did. Here is a video that shows a representation of what would happen if a 500 kilometer object, such as those that hit Earth from 3.8 to 4 billion years ago, hit the Earth today.
